  1. Fascinating, informative idea for a blog! Thanks.

Thanks also for discovering my photography blog http://www.throughharoldslens.com.

You gave me the opportunity to discover, explore and follow your blog. I hope we both enjoy our journeys.

To help launch you on your journey, I thought you might enjoy a couple of “Quick Links” to a few of my favorites, from over 200 posts, on Through Harold’s Lens:

    1. I am pleased that you like my blog! Also, thank you for following me and commenting on my post, I really appreciate it. By the way, I love your blog posts and the photos.

  2. I’m inclined to agree with your stance. Looking at other lists puts leeds ahead of Manchester. Having living in both places I can honestly say that Manchester is significantly bigger in every aspect. So a highly “accurate” list isn’t necessarily a realistic list. I consider this one to be the latter. Thank you for sharing your work.

  3. Before anyone starts arguing about the City of London, as above, it is, like the City of Westminster, a ceremonial county within the city of London.

  4. Think the sometimes heated debate about where to include urban centres, who’s bigger than whom etc, is just as interesting as the stats themselves!

  5. I really commend your efforts to even attempt to compile the 1000 most populous settlements in the UK and its territories, I really do. It’s not a task I’d attempt in a million years. And to give you even more credit, you’ve clearly worked to improve the list since its inception, as the populations for the bigger settlements seem to roughly be in line with figures I’m familiar with, which wasn’t the case when I first checked the list. But I’d hazard a guess that the reason I can’t find anybody else who has attempted this is because it is ridiculously difficult, especially when trying to compile all the settlements lower down the list. I did a quick page search for specific well-known towns and cities with populations between 1,000 and 30,000 and roughly half of them didn’t seem to be on the list, namely Oban (Argyll and Bute), Fort William (Highland), Bromyard (Herefordshire), St Ives (Cornwall) (I’ll revise this one – it appears to be included but both St Ives in Cornwall and Cambridgeshire are St Ives rather than St Ive’s), Newquay (Cornwall), Armagh (County Armagh), Abergavenny (Monmouthshire), Maldon (Essex) and Stonehaven (Aberdeenshire). So I’m not entirely sure what your method for including all relevant settlements is, but it needs work. Maybe even compiling a list for each given region of the UK in citypopulation.de would be a good start, which go down pretty low in terms of population.

Also, I’m pretty confused by the variation in choice of the subdivison for each settlement. Sometimes it’s the ceremonial county, sometimes it’s the country of the UK, sometimes its the name of the council, sometimes it’s an ancient kingdom that hasn’t had any administrative purpose for hundreds of years (I’m looking at you Wessex), and sometimes it’s none of the above. Sometimes it’s not even uniform for a given area – i.e. Liverpool appears to be in Lancashire and Cheshire (administratively it’s not been part of Lancashire for 40 years), and Huyton is in Merseyside. I appreciate that administrative areas aren’t uniform between England, Scotland, Wales and NI, but in my opinion the best thing to do would be to pick one type of subdivision for each country and stick to it. So maybe ceremonial counties for England, council areas for Scotland, principal areas for Wales and counties of NI (as they seem to change their current administrative areas for fun), as these are all relevant to the modern day position of each settlement and give a good degree of uniformity.

I’m sorry if I’ve come across a bit harsh, evidently the length of time I imagine it takes to compile this and upon that to make any changes is considerable. I write this as I’ve noticed this being used as a source for many pages which have extracted population figures recently, quite possibly because you are the only person who has attempted to compile such an extensive list. You clearly deserve recognition for this fact, but I feel if you were to make the list more reliable you’d both be providing a better source for these people and also widening the potential of the people that would deem it a good source to use, which would only get your blog more attention.

    1. Thank you for the advice, and I will be adding those settlements to the list. The reason I first started to compile this list was because I recognised the need for a list with the 1000 biggest UK towns and cities, so I decided to create my own. The reason why the subdivisions appear to be different is because I believe in making the UK a federal country. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have already got their own governments now (though NI government seems to be in turmoil), but England has been left alone. I wanted to create ‘provinces’ within England that would be of similar sizes to the other countries of the UK, because England is too big. The 16 provinces that I devised were: Anglia, Cornwall, Cumbria, East Midlands, Essex, Kent, Lancashire and Cheshire, Northern Ireland, Northumberland, Scotland, Sussex, Thames Valley, Wales, Wessex, West Midlands and Yorkshire.

  6. I don’t see Ballynahinch or Comber on the list in Northern Ireland, both between 5 and 12 thousand population.

  7. 617,280 for Bristol is far too high (it’s more like 440,000). 617,280 is the ONS figure for the built-up area of Bristol which includes contiguous settlements like Kingswood and Filton which are outside the city boundary.

  8. A strange list of populations …. some of which are way off the mark! Just out of interest …. where are Evesham & Pershore in Worcestershire???!! Towns with populations of around 23,000 and 10,000 respectively!

  9. You missed out Windsor and Ludlow, neither of which is huge, but both of which are larger than some of the town’s on this list.

    Thanks, I enjoyed reading this.
