World: 1000 Largest Cities by Population


The largest city in the world is Shanghai, in the population powerhouse of China. As of 2012, China is now home to one quarter of the world’s 1000 largest cities, according to the United Nations. London is now in sixteenth place, however it was once the largest city in the world until 1925. This is a list of the largest cities, and not the region or urbanised area surrounding it. This list is being continually updated. Cities in Italics are the capital of their country. Most population figures are from the latest census figures of the country or estimates from 2013.
