  1. It can’t be true – I just looked up at the size of Barassie, rank 558 in your list – I was expecting quite a small place but BANG – this can’t be right.
    Have a look 55.558738,-4.655592
It seems no filled the last census here properly.. lol

Nice list but I don’t think they would be accurate by any sort of exact numbers.

  2. Fascinating, informative idea for a blog! Thanks.

  3. Interesting post. Out of interest, what data are you using to compile this? Only thing I’ve noticed specifically is that St Austell, Cornwall’s largest town, doesn’t appear to be present.

  4. Most places in the list are towns, not cities, and you probably need a disclaimer explaining that the populations are for the city proper not the urban area. Also, Welsh towns/cities have a white square next to them rather than the Welsh flag or the cross of St. David…

  5. Loads of Scottish towns missing – Arbroath in Angus – population 24,000 is missing as are the other Angus towns – Forfar (14k), Montrose (12k), Brechin (7k), Carnoustie (10K), Kirriemuir (7k), also Stonehaven, Westhill, Ellon, Peterhead in Aberdeenshire etc etc etc. Massively incomplete list.

  6. Why have you put the population of Greater Manchester rather than the figure for the city? Why have you then put the population of Birmingham city, but not for its metropolitan county of the West Midlands. You have (accidentally???) created huge confusion. The population of the city of Birmingham is, in fact, over twice that of the city of Manchester. Unfortunately the BBC appears to have taken your figures to support its ill-disguised campaign to present Manchester as the second city of the realm, a status still rightfully belonging to Birmingham.

  7. Already been said, but the list is wrong from the second entry down as Greater Manchester is an area, not a city. The population of Manchester itself is smaller than Brum, Glasgow, Leeds, Sheffield and more…

Greater Manchester actually includes two cities (Manchester and Salford) and several large towns.

    1. As I live in Manchester, I believe that all the boroughs of the current Greater Manchester should be merged into one city, just like London is now. This is because currently, many Manchester landmarks such as Media City UK, Imperial War Museum North, Manchester United Stadium and much of what is regarded as Manchester city centre is actually administratively in Salford. If I went by your rule, London would have a population of just 7,000 instead of 8,000,000 as that is the population of the CITY of London and 8 million is the population of greater London.

      1. Who composed this list? It is completely worthless if the compiler is comparing metropolitan counties such as Grater Manchester with cities such as Birmingham and Leeds.
I will give you a little geography lesson for free. Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county, which consists of Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford. Its population is 2.685 million. The population of Manchester was only 514,417 in 2013. The city of Manchester is only a part of, and not the same as, Greater Manchester.
You are comparing apples to oranges. To compare apples to apples I will use the following example. The West Midlands is also a metropolitan county, which consists of the City of Birmingham, the City of Coventry, and the City of Wolverhampton, as well as Dudley, Sandwell, Solihull, and Walsall. Its population is 2.783 million. The city of Birmingham’s population was 1.09 million in 2013.
Again, comparing apples to apples. Birmingham has the second largest population in the UK after London.
Before you start arguing about the City of London, it is, like the City of Westminster, a ceremonial county within the city of London.
You are distorting the statistics to inflate the importance of your own city which should only rank 11th on the list above.

  8. You can not compare the size of one conurbation to the size of another city. You believe that Greater Manchester should count as a city,(mainly because all the nice bits are in Salford and Trafford).
I partially accept the argument but then shouldn’t the West Midlands metropolitan area (Where I live)
count as one city ? The figure you give for Birmingham City misses out areas with Birmingham (B)
postcodes and taxpayers to Birmingham City Council. Also Sandwell and Solihull have separate councils but are part of Birmingham.
Your argument and list is inaccurate and inconsistent. You believing Gtr Manchester should be a city does not mean it is and trying to compare its population to other cities is not accurate.

      1. I’m inclined to agree with your stance. Looking at other lists puts leeds ahead of Manchester. Having living in both places I can honestly say that Manchester is significantly bigger in every aspect. So a highly “accurate” list isn’t necessarily a realistic list. I consider this one to be the latter. Thank you for sharing your work.

  10. Anonymous,

You talk about bigger in every aspect but the page is called “largest by population” so thats the only aspect that
counts. Not the football clubs or the airport or MediaCity, its about POPULATION figures.

    thegeographist

London has around 30 councils and many town centres. If I visit Wembley or Haringey or Wimbledon I’m visiting London as
the world knows it. “London” is a collection of these boroughs and councils. There is no London City Centre.

Wigan, Blackburn, Rochdale and Newton le willows are not part of Manchester in the same way that Wolverhampton, Walsall are
    not counted in Birmingham’s figures.

You give a figure of 109,000 for Sutton Coldfield not knowing that it’s a Birmingham area which has a Birmingham postcode and
is served by Birmingham City Council. This is also true of West Bromwich and Smethwick. This proves how unrealistic your
    research is.

Manchester has a metropolian area, but so does Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham and the East Midlands. You cannot put Altrincham,
Atherton,Bury,Oldham,Salford,Stockport,Rochdale,Sale,Bolton,Newton-le-Willows and Stalybridge etc all together under the
heading “Manchester” to make it seem bigger than Birmingham, Glasgow and Leeds. Its around 60 miles from the Northern area to
the Southern area of where you are talking about. AND ITS NOT THE CITY OF MANCHESTER.

If you are going to post information like this, get it right. Do your homework.

London has around 30 councils and many town centres. If I visit Wembley or Haringey or Wimbledon I’m visiting London as the world knows it. “London” is a collection of these boroughs and councils. There is no London City Centre.

Wigan, Blackburn, Rochdale and Newton le willows are not part of Manchester in the same way that Wolverhampton, Walsall are not counted in Birmingham’s figures.

You give a figure of 109,000 for Sutton Coldfield not knowing that it’s a Birmingham area which has a Birmingham postcode and is served by Birmingham City Council. This is also true of West Bromwich and Smethwick. This proves how unrealistic your research is.

Manchester has a metropolian area, but so does Liverpool, Leeds, Birmingham and the East Midlands.
You cannot put Altrincham, Atherton,Bury,Oldham,Salford,Stockport,Rochdale,Sale,Bolton,Newton-le-Willows and Stalybridge etc all together under the heading “Manchester” to make it seem bigger than Birmingham, Glasgow and Leeds. Its around 60 miles from the Northern area to
the Southern area of where you are talking about. AND ITS NOT THE CITY OF MANCHESTER.

If you are going to post information like this, get it right. Do your homework.

  12. This guy has also double counted. For the population of the city of Manchester he has used the population of the county of Greater Manchester. He then has listed further down the names and populations of towns in the county of Greater Manchester.
